Have your say on council's £21m budget cuts

RESIDENTS are invited to comment on Rotherham Borough Council’s proposals to save £21 million next financial year.

Increased parking charges, closing Rotherham Visitor Centre in All Saints’ Square, cutting library staff and installing pay kiosks at Riverside House are among the plans.

Some £3.3 million will be cut from adult social care — part of a three-year £9.1 million reduction — with older and vulnerable folk being asked to do more for themselves.

Streamlining management and sharing more costs with schools are among the ideas to trim nearly £1 million from children’s services.

Council leader Cllr Chris Read said: “In common with councils across the country, Rotherham faces another big budget challenge this year as a consequence of the Government's reductions in grants.

“There are no easy answers, and whilst we want to minimise the impact on the public, clearly this is not always going to be possible.

“We remain committed to using our resources to protect our most vulnerable children and adults, and to shield frontline services wherever possible.”

Cllr Read added: “The proposals have already been made public as part of the council’s scrutiny process and residents, partners and staff are now being formally invited to make any further comments they may have.

“Local people helped us to set out our priorities during the Views from Rotherham consultation last year, and now there is a further chance for people to comment on the detail of these specific proposals, or to contribute other ideas.”

The proposals can be viewed at www.rotherham.gov.uk/budget. Comment by emailing [email protected] or by writing to Budget Consultation, Community Engagement, Rotherham Council, Riverside House, Main Street, Rotherham S60 1AE.

The deadline is February 12 at 5pm and the budget will be set at the council meeting on March 2.
