Council to discuss Trade Union Bill

COUNCILLORS will vote today on a motion calling on the Government to scrap its Trade Union Bill.

The Labour group has submitted it for discussion at this afternoon's full Rotherham Borough Council meeting.

The motion calls the bill an “ideologically-driven” attack on the freedom of workers to take strike action.

Cllr Richard Price, who will propose the motion, said: “It aims to renew our commitment to protecting the rights of workers at a time when economic uncertainty, squeezed wages and Government cuts to many jobs and public services are putting real pressure on working people.”

The Government says the bill will improve union transparency and ensure strikes are based on stronger mandates.
