Ann's the first lady of Sitwell Rotary Club

NEW girl Ann Ogley has broken a 23-year-old male stranglehold by becoming the first woman member of one of Rotherham’s biggest fund-raising and social groups.

President Stuart Lister formally welcomed her as the club’s 43rd member during a meeting at the Carlton Park Hotel, in Moorgate, declaring: “She could be the first of many.”

Chartered accountant Mrs Ogley, who is the company secretary at Maltby Auto Electrical Services, said: “Hopefully this will open to door to others now I’ve broken the duck “We’ve already got another prospective female member.”

The international organisation agreed to admit women back in 1989 but the Sitwell club only voted to follow suit last year.

President Stuart Lister added: “Rotary clubs in Great Britain and Ireland did not begin to actively recruit women until the mid-1990s and the word has spread slowly.

“Although Sitwell has always welcomed visiting female Rotarians, we have not in the past received any applications from women to join us.

“We did discuss the issue within the club and agreed that we would make a conscious and concerted effort to actively seek potential female members.

“I’m delighted to say those efforts have borne fruit with the induction of Ann as a member and we now have two further potential women recruits on the horizon.”

The Sitwell club, which was based at the Brecon Hotel in Moorgate for several years and raised £15,000 for charity last year, meets at the nearby Carlton Park Hotel on Thursdays at 6.30pm.
