People power could save Maltby clock tower

CAMPAIGNERS who thought they had lost their fight to stop the demolition of an iconic school clock tower are celebrating a dramatic turnaround.

An action group formed to save the old grammar school frontage in Maltby suffered a hammer blow last year after plans were approved by borough councillors.

But it is now understood a meeting has taken place between Maltby Academy’s head of finance and head teacher and Maltby Town Council to discuss new plans to regenerate the old building, which would save the frontage.

The proposal would be to seek private finance to fund the scheme.

Plans to alter the original scheme are expected to be submitted to Rotherham Borough Council planning department.

One insider said: “This is great news for the people of Maltby and all those who fought to save it — it’s people power in action.”
