Number of abandoned pets up

SOARING numbers of dumped dogs have prompted a Rotherham rescue charity to move to a bigger home.

Rotherham Dog Rescue’s new home at Brinsworth has 27 kennels, double the number of kennels—than its former rented block at Aston.

Lisa Parks, behaviourist for Rotherham Dog Rescue, said: “We’ve ended up going somewhere where there are 27 kennels, because the demand for rehoming dogs has increased so much.”

She said that the economic climate was partly to blame, as more and more people were being made redundant or losing their homes.

She said: “The pounds are always full and we are taking in a huge number of dogs from homes and there are a lot of dogs still being dumped.”

The new premises are rented and Lisa said: “It’s working out well, though we are still trying to find our own place to buy.

“We want an adoption and rehabilitation site for the local area.

“We’ve taken up a contract for a year at Brinsworth—it would be ideal to find somewhere to buy within the year.

“We would consider either doing up an old kennels or starting from scratch.”

In the meantime, though, all the dogs are loving their new facility at Brinsworth, including Rotherham Dog Rescue’s mascot, boxer cross Otto.

Lisa said: “It’s a bigger facility with more room for the dogs.

“We couldn’t have squeezed any more dogs in where we were before.

“We’ve already increased in size from 14 dogs to 21—and we’ll probably have 27 dogs in within the next few days.”

With taking on double the amount of kennels, Rotherham Dog Rescue is desperate for both financial support and help from volunteers in walking the dogs, to help the animals get rehabilitated.

The charity is also keen to hear from anyone prepared to organise a social event or fund-raiser.

Anyone interested in adopting a dog or who can help as a volunteer is asked to contact Rotherham Dog Rescue by telephoning 07742 602255. Viewing of dogs is by appointment only.

Donations of tinned dog food are also welcomed by the charity, which relies on these supplies to keep going—along with collections of donated dog food made at Morrisons in Catcliffe.

All 14 dogs currently being looked after by the charity made the trip from Aston to Brinsworth on foot.
