New chance for drug and alcohol abuse sufferers

PEOPLE recovering from drug and alcohol abuse are going back to the classroom thanks to a Dearne Valley scheme.

Conisbrough based Doncaster West Development Trust (DWDT) has launched Moving On following a successful trial session.

Through the scheme, people take part in bespoke courses at Barnsley’s Northern College including photography, psychology and confidence-building.

The overall aim is to help people back into work or training as well as improve their self esteem and motivation.

DWDT support worker Rob Keane the small steps had huge benefits for “difficult to reach” clients.

He added: “Many of those involved in the taster session, had no experience of education since their school days.

“The positive response we got when they plucked up the courage to attend the courses, made all the effort worthwhile.

“I genuinely believe this kind of experience can trigger something in people to want to take a new direction.

“Our clients don’t normally experience much outside their own environment so doing something this different spurs them on.

“The improvement in their confidence is fantastic to see and there hasn’t been a single person who doesn’t want to learn more.”

Rob said that anyone interested would be given full support and help with travel arrangements.
