Mystery of Zac the wandering mastiff

A CHARITY is calling for help in tracking down the owners of a wandering dog found almost 170 miles away from home.

The Blue Cross animal charity is currently looking after Zac, a mastiff cross found “in a terrible state” in the Victoria area of London.

When volunteers scanned his microchip, they found that he was registered to an address in Mexborough.

Vets called the contact details recorded but found that his owners no longer live at the property, so they are hoping to reunite the missing mutt with them with the help of the Advertiser.

Staff at Blue Cross believe that he could have been wandering the streets for several weeks.

Annette Bullock, staff nurse at the Blue Cross hospital in Victoria, where Zac is being cared for, said: “Poor Zac was in a terrible state when he arrived with us, really weak and hungry with bites all over his legs.

“He’s such a soft, gentle boy—we think he must have loving owners somewhere who are missing him.

“It would be a really happy New Year if we could reunite them.”

She added: “We don’t think Zac was a stray as he was wearing a collar and lead when he was found.

“He might have got lost if his owners were visiting London over the festive period, moved here or he may even have been stolen and later dumped.”

Zac was found on New Year’s Eve in Cricklewood, north west London.

He was very weak, dehydrated and underweight, so his finders rushed him to vets at The Blue Cross.

He also needed urgent treatment for multiple bite wounds to his legs.

Annette said that Zac’s case illustrated just how important it was for owners to keep the details their pet’s microchip up to date when moving house.

Zac’s owners, or anyone who knows where they might be living now, are asked to contact Blue Cross on 020 7932 2370.
