More smokers kicking the habit

NEW figures show that Rotherham is seeing a record number of people quitting smoking.

Last year, 2,763 people in the borough kicked the habit with NHS support.

This is compared to 2,286 in 2008–an increase of almost 500 people within 12 months.

Simon Lister, manager of Rotherham NHS Stop Smoking Service said: “We are really delighted that so many people have chosen to stop smoking.

“We know that around two-thirds of all smokers want to stop, and our service is there to help them.

Julie Blackburn, who used to smoke 20 cigarettes a day said: “I couldn't have done it without the support of the Stop Smoking Service. I wish I'd given up years ago.”

The Stop Smoking team are also working alongside school children in a bid to prevent them from taking up the habit.
