Matlby fire station 'safe from cuts'

FIRE chiefs have moved to douse rumours that Maltby fire station is set to close as part of budget cuts running to millions of pounds.

A spokesman said that the rumours may stem from the fact that the fire service regularly conducts feasability studies on all of its stations.

He insisted that there were no new plans to axe any stations, with Darnall, Mansfield Road and Mosborough in Sheffield and Royston near Barnsley all earmarked for the chop at a meeting last March.

“On an ongoing basis, SYFR reviews the location and suitability of all its resources, including fire station,” he said.

“There are no current plans to close any existing fire station, other than those which were previously announced in March.

“The police, fire and ambulance services all have a base in Maltby, in three separate locations.

“The possibility of sharing a common facility is currently being investigated and may, or may not, be possible.

“However, to be absolutely clear, there are no plans to close Maltby fire station.”
