Master gardeners' trophies to go on display

THE LONG-running success of a green-fingered couple who won seven Rotherham Garden of the Year awards will be recognised by their trophies going on public display.

Green-fingered Henry and Doris Morris took the crown of Rotherham’s best garden seven years on the trot during the 1960s.

The couple’s colourful garden at their Kimberworth Park Road home saw them win four Dr Clark Cups - handed out by Rotherham Borough Council - as well as three other awards.

Now, their son John Morris has donated the awards back to the council for them to put on display for the public.

John said: “My mum and dad were always in the garden -  they absolutely loved it.

“They said they would like them to go on show in a museum with a bit of information about the garden competition so that’s why I approached the council.”

Mr Morris, a former steelworker, used to enjoy gardening as a hobby.

John said: “When you work in the steel industry you need a hobby that gets you some fresh air and gardening was what he chose to do. When I was growing up at home they were both always gardening.”

John said he had contacted the council in the hope it would show them at Clifton Park Museum or Riverside House along with information about the competition.

His parents’ success was featured in the Advertiser (inset) at the time - including their first trophy win in 1961.

He said: “The trophy was quite prestigious in those days. I think people used to spend a lot more time in their gardens.”
