Masbrough Chapel plans put on hold

PLANS to demolish the burned out ruins of historic Masbrough Chapel have been halted by planners.

Rotherham Borough Council wants more information about why demolition is necessary after hearing that repairs and safety work would cost £7.5million.

AK Global has asked for permission to knock down the remains of the 18th-century listed building in College Road, which was wrecked by arsonists three months ago.

Objectors, including the Friends of Masbrough Chapel and Rotherham Civic Society, had urged the council to ask for a more detailed survey of the ruins.

A council spokeswoman said: “We consider that the applicant has failed to justify that the total loss of the building is absolutely necessary in terms of its structural stability.”
