Masbrough carpet store destroyed by fire being demolished

Part of a former carpet store destroyed by a huge inferno was being pulled down today after firefighters finally put out the blaze.

More than 40 firefighters from five stations were at the scene in College Road, Masbrough, at the height of the blaze last night.

Centenary Way was closed yesterday afternoon due to a large amount of smoke from the fire, which was reported at 10am.

The roof of the building collapsed, as well as one side of the building, while people in neighbouring flats were advised to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution.

A high volume pump was brought to the incident to get more water onto the flames from a nearby canal.

The partial demolition of the building was in progress this afternoon to make the safe after the fire was finally put out.

An investigation is expected to be launched to identify the cause.
