But after years of Martin handing over money to the bookies, the boot was on the other foot when he visited his favourite betting shop to pick up a cheque for £38,562.

Swinton’s Totesport manager, Jane Frame, said: “I’ve never paid out on a bet like it. Martin’s a lucky guy.

“I spoke to my area manager about the odds of its coming in and the number of possibilities just made it too complex to calculate."

The massive win capped a 20-year run of betting on the horses of trainer and former England footballer, Mick Channon, but this week an elated Martin revealed that there was no art in his betting.

He said: “I’ve been betting on Mick Channon’s horses ever since he became a trainer. “I liked him as a footballer so I’ve stayed loyal to him because of that.

“I never thought that it would bring me so much luck at the bookies. It’s amazing.” Martin, who runs Swinton’s High House pub with his wife Megan, as well as holding down a full-time job at Kilnhurst storage firm Ready Rack, puts on a Lucky 15 and a £2 Lucky Scoop every week.

On Saturday, August 28, he placed his bets as usual and it was not until later that he checked the day’s results on Teletext and realised that all the picks had won.

Three of the four winners were at Beverley, as Kalleidoscope romped at 20-1 in the 1.55, Aattash came in at 11-1 in the 3.00 and Mr Hughie took the 3.30 at 7-1. Bravo Bravo completed the quartet by winning the 5.25 at Goodwood at 25-1.

Martin said: “When I saw that all the horses had come in I just froze. I wasn’t jumping for joy, I was just shaking. I couldn’t believe it.”

Betting shop manager Jane admitted: “I was shaking as I signed the cheque. “When I saw that the horses had all come in, my first thoughts were ‘There goes this year’s bonus’ but then I felt really pleased for Martin.

“He comes in every Saturday and he’s a lovely bloke.”

Martin tipped the team at Totesport in Swinton £200 upon receiving his winnings.

He has insisted that he will not be going on a giant spending spree following the win, but added: “We will be having a holiday, we’ve already started looked at the brochures, but it won’t change me. I’ll be back at the bookies on Saturday.”

The four winners were: Kalleidoscope at 20-1, Aattash at 11-1, Mr Hughie at 7-1 and Bravo Bravo at 25-1.
