The man and his wife were walking along the fields at the back of Quarry Field Lane, Wickersley, at about 3.30pm on Tuesday when a group of about eight men, who were riding off-road bikes, approached them.

Acting Det Sgt Richard Gladwin said: “We believe two members of the group demanded that the man hand over his mobile phone. When he refused to, it is said that the group assaulted him, kicking him repeatedly before taking his phone.

“The victim was taken to hospital with suspected broken ribs and a punctured lung. He currently remains in hospital in a stable condition.

“This was an extremely nasty assault and I’d like to ask anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw what happened to contact us.
