Man dies in M1 smash

A 42-year-old Wincobank man died when his car hit a road sign after drifting on to a grass embankment from the hard shoulder near junction 31.

The accident happened at around 8.40pm as the driver’s silver Vauxhall Vectra approached the exit slip at the junction while travelling northwards.

The man died later from his injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or the moments leading up to it is urged to contact South Yorkshire Police quoting incident 1172 of 4 July 2011.
