Lower speed limits to improve road safety

SPEED limits are to be lowered on several roads in a bid to increase safety for pedestrians and motorists.

If Rotherham Borough Council approves the plan, the changes would be introduced before the end of the year at a cost of £50,000.

A review into all A and B roads has also recommended five more speed reduction area, but more funding will need to be found because engineering measures are needed.

The first batch of changes will see Pleasley Road in Whiston, Tickhill Road in Maltby and Red Hill at Kiveton becoming 30mph zones.

Stubbin Road at Rawmarsh, Worrygoose Lane at Whiston and Wath Road at Manvers will be lowered to 40mph.

A report to a council committee this week said: “The setting of realistic speed limits that are adhered to and understood by the public will contribute positively towards casualty reduction targets, and help in terms of community and quality of life issues.

“A further list indicates roads where the review suggests engineering measures should be implemented to achieve a reduction in the speed limit.”
