Kids tackle triathlon

HUNDREDS of schoolchildren enjoyed a mini-triathlon in Maltby—taking up the chance to experience one of the UK’s fastest growing sports.

The fun race was part of Tata’s Kids of Steel programme, aiming to give the youngsters a safe first taste of a triathlon, which involves running, swimming and cycling.

Two dozen schools from across Rotherham—and much further afield—lined up at Maltby Leisure Centre this morning to complete the 1,400 metre distance.

Tata’s South Yorkshire HR manager Mick Hood said: “We are thrilled to bring this event to Rotherham.

“The series has been received brilliantly across the country, with more than 25,000 children taking part since it was launched in 2007.

“Our aim is to get children excited about sport and to encourage participation in triathlon at a grass roots level.”
