Homes plan for toxic ex-Croda site

ONE of the most poisonous development sites in the UK could soon be buried under hundreds of new homes.

Developer Gleeson Homes wants to build 382 houses at the former Croda tar distillery in Kilnhurst.

But the contaminated land will have to be made safe first with a protective seal being placed about 1.7 metres below the homes.

Company planning director Steve Gamble said: “The application has to be signed-off by borough council planners, environmental health and the Environment Agency.

“The sealant will fully comply with all matters regarding human health. The contaminated material will be stabilised and encapsulated.”

We’ve got to get rid of the site’s stigma, admits firm: SEE TOMORROW’S ADVERTISER.
