HMV pulls out as Parkgate Shopping lease ends

ENTERTAINMENT chain HMV has closed its store at Parkgate Shopping.

The store, which opened in 1997 and employed 12 members of staff, shut its doors on Tuesday.

Managers have entered into a period of consultation with staff considered at risk of redundancy, but the chain said that it was “working hard to offer them alternative positions” within the firm.

A spokesman said: “We’re very sorry to be losing our store in Retail World, Parkgate—but unfortunately its lease had come to an end.

“We’d like to thank our regular customers who shopped at the store over the past 15 years, and we look forward to welcoming them at other HMVs nearby or online.

“We’re also very grateful to our work colleagues at the store—this decision is no reflection on their hard work and dedication, and we're doing our best to find them alternative roles within our organisation.”

The move comes a year after HMV group, which operates through over 200 stores, specialising in music, film and games, announced that it would close 60 stores as a result of declining sales in “challenging trading conditions.”

A notice on the Rotherham store said that the closure is due to its lease coming to an end.
