Hamper helpers needed to help feed Rotherham families

AN urgent appeal for helpers is being made by a project which helps feed needy families at Christmas.

Rotherham-based Food Awaresays demand for its Christmas hampers is soaring and volunteers were needed to help collect unwanted food from Rotherham's supermarkets and shops and make sure it got where it was needed.

Project leader Sean Gibbons said the charity was feeding 750 people at the moment, but that figure would rise to 1,000 by Christmas.

The Mexborough-based organisation has a depot in Hellaby where it puts together hampers of fruit, vegetables and other food on or just past its use by date for distribution across Rotherham and Doncaste.

Sean said that Food Aware had received requests from 30 different projects and groups for a total of 800 hampers across South Yorkshire in the run-up to Christmas but that he expected the total to top 1,000.

“We really need to start getting all the food parcels together so we would love to hear from anyone who can help,” he said.

To volunteer phone Sean on 07887 750175 or email [email protected].

He would also like to hear from organisation supporting the vulnerable who could like Christmas food parcels and from any suppliers who could offer surplus food or financial help.
