Green light for Rotherham flood defences

DOZENS of town centre businesses will be in less danger of flooding after plans for new defences were approved.

And a new wall on the eastern bank of the River Don will shield Rotherham Interchange and pedestrian areas.

New flood defences will be built on top of an existing wall from the Tesco footbridge and Chantry bridge.

The second section will run north from Rotherham Old Bridge to the bus station.

A Rotherham Borough Council spokesman said: “The design and appearance of the flood defence wall will not harm the setting of the adjacent Scheduled Ancient Monument of the Rotherham Old Bridge and the Grade I listed Chapel of Our Lady.”

The scheme will provide protection from a level of flooding expected only once a century.
