Garden project seeking volunteers

A COMMUNITY group aiming to help families grown their own is on the lookout for volunteers to help their their idea blossom.

Swinton Fitzwilliam Mutual Association is looking for volunteers to help out in their community project to turn a patch of overgrown land into an allotment and garden.

They also plan to construct a greenhouse from used fizzy drinks bottles at the site off Lawrence Drive and are asking residents and tenants to contribute their empty bottles.

Ann Harvard, project leader, said: “There are many single parent families and highly deprived families in this area and we want to help them but we have little to no funding.

“The aim of the association is to encourage these families to grow their own produce and to ensure that the families of her community are not deprived of food as they will be able to grow their own food.”

The group have received funding from the Wentworth North Area Housing Panel to secure the land, which will be subject to a major clean-up operation before the digging can begin.

Ann added: “Unfortunately, this land requires a lot of work to be done to it so as to get it into a good shape because it is overgrown and is commonly used for fly tipping.

“The borough council has volunteered to help with the work involved.

“We would like as many volunteers as possible to lend their hands for this cause by helping to start cleaning up the land and get the project up and running for her local community.

“We need as much help as we can to clear this piece of land as it is something we really need to do before we can start planting vegetables.”

The first clean-up day is tomorrow. To volunteer and get involved, contact Ann at 01709 435100.
