Footballers' reunion

A REUNION of schoolboy footballers, including a team who were national champions, is being held next month.

The call has gone out to all those who played in the First and 2nd XIs at Mexborough Grammar School from 1967 to 1983 which includes the 1972 squad who won the English Schools FA Individual Schools U19 competition.

The PE teacher in charge across those years, BobBennett, has organised the reunion to be held at the Queen's Hotel, Kilnhurst Road, Rawmarsh on Sunday, December 16 (3pm onwards).

"I've already had notification from many old boys who will be coming from different parts of the country, we've even got a 1972 lad coming from Canada," said Bob, who retired as deputy head at Mexborough in 2005.

"We had the national success in 1972, were semi-finalists twice and Yorkshire champions many times and had a number who went on and played professionally including Alan Suderland, Ian Banks, Peter Kitchen, Peter Hart, Dylan Kerr and we'd love to see them as well," added Bob who is also trying to track down former teacher Mike Brookfield.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of any old boys from those years can contact Bob on 01709 892983 or email him at [email protected]
