Foodbank handing out 100 parcels a month

ROTHERHAM Foodbank has appealed for more donations amid rising numbers of referrals.

The charity, part of the Trussell Trust Foodbank Network, is running low on stocks of food.

In the last financial year, 1,320 three-day emergency food packages were provided to Rotherham people in crisis by the foodbank.

More than 468 of these went towards feeding children.

Project manager Steve Prosser said: “We can only continue to provide crucial support with the community’s help. We rely on local donations.

“We are not turning away people who come with a foodbank voucher, but we want to make sure that while there is a need for our work, we are able to provide a full, nutritionally-balanced supply of three days’ emergency food.”

The charity, which is based on Grove Road, provides emergency support for residents who find themselves struggling financially, often because of redundancy, illness or unexpected bills.

Everyone who attends has been referred from a frontline agency like Citizens’ Advice or a health worker.

Steve said: “The foodbank really is the community working for the community and we’re very grateful for all of the support we’ve received since we opened in 2011.

“It is humbling to see how much people are willing to give, and the difference this can make when someone is at their lowest point.

“We have received donations from people who have been helped by the foodbank before, and are now back on their feet and want to help someone else.

“An emergency food parcel, cup of tea and a listening ear at the foodbank can have such an impact, so any donations will make a difference.”
