FIREFIGHTERS called police after discovering a crop of cannabis in a loft that was moments away from going up in flames.

Officers found a cannabis growing operation in the roof space of the house on Willow Lane, Bolton, after the fire fighting team put out the blaze at around 5pm last Thursday .

A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis, illegal abstraction of electricity and arson. He was later given bail.

Insp Alan Simpson from Dearne Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “This incident clearly shows why Dearne SNT is determined to stamp out the production of drugs of all kinds in the three villages.

“If this fire had been allowed to spread, lives would have been endangered. “Illegal drug users, suppliers and producers have no place in our villages and using all the powers available to us we will pursue this minority and bring them to justice.”
