Fire forces Christmas cancellation at Magna

CHRISTMAS parties for around 1,500 revellers at Magna were cancelled after a massive blaze at a recycling plant next door.

Fire crews were still at the scene yesterday after the incident on Saturday afternoon at Sterecycle Ltd at Sheffield Road, Templeborough, when 2,000 tonnes of baled plastic went up in flames at 1.30pm. The cause is being investigated.

Smoke-logging meant that all weekend events at Magna had to be cancelled, costing the venue an estimated £60,000 in lost revenue.

Disappointed partygoers have been offered a full refund or an alternative party in January.

People living close to the scene were asked to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution on Saturday.

No-one is believed to have been injured in the blaze.
