Fire crews’ busy weekend

FIREFIGHTERS tackled several suspected arsons over the weekend.

Three crews attended a building fire on Doncaster Road, Eastwood at 6.50pm on Saturday.

Two teams from Rotherham fire station and one from Dearne fought a blaze on the first floor with hoses and breathing apparatus.

They left the scene at 8.30pm after using fans to disperse smoke. Investigators believe that the blaze was started deliberately.

Later one crew from Dearne and another from Edlington responded to a wheelie bin fire in a stairway at flats on Hirst Gate, Mexborough.

Firefighters arrived at 11.30pm, leaving around half an hour later.

Occupants were at home in the flat above, but no-one was injured.

Another crew from Dearne fire station attended a bin fire on Glen View, Mexborough at 11.40pm on Sunday.

They took 15 minutes to put out a blaze in an industrial wheelie bin, which is also thought to have been started deliberately.
