Fire crew batters down door to rescue blaze victim

FIREFIGHTERS rescued an unconscious man from his burning property after smashing down his front door with a sledgehammer.

The man, in his 40s, was found unconscious on his settee after firefighters responded to reports of a fire in a flat on Windmill Avenue, Conisbrough, at around 12.10am yesterday.

Describing the blaze as “serious” South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue group manager, Ade Robinson, said: “It started from a pan being left on the hob and catching fire. It then spread to the cooker hood, cupboards and microwave oven.

“Firefighters had to use a sledgehammer to get into the flat, and they did very well to get the occupier out so quickly.

“It was a second floor flat, and the staircase was very tight.”

The unconscious man was taken to hospital from the scene following treatment by paramedics.
