Exhbition features DIY art

A ONE-off event is set to ensure that work from some of the town’s most under-exposed artists is well hung for all to see.

Aspiring poets, photographers and artists are being encouraged to submit work for a special month-long exhibition—called Hung—which has been organised by Rotherham Open Arts Renaissance.

Anyone can submit work and be part of the event which runs until May 24.

Visitors to the Hung exhibition, which will be held in the inner atrium of ROAR’s base at the town centre’s Imperial Buildings, can even call in and create their own piece of art, using various materials that will be made available.

ROAR development officer, Matt Butt, said: “We really want anyone with any kind of artistic idea to take the opportunity to get their work displayed.

“It’s not a competition and the only rule is that all the displays have to be A3-sized and flat.

“The exhibit will be held in the internal atrium of the Imperial Buildings and anyone can call in and create something to put on display.”

Matt said that he was aware there was a risk attached to giving the people of Rotherham to display whatever they want in the name of art, but added: “Visitors will have the right to censor work if they find it offensive in any way, but a censored collection of works will still be available for braver visitors to take a look through.

“Hung is going to be self policing, it’s there to reflect the talents of people in the town and, hopefully, people will embrace it.”

The Imperial Buildings, and the Hung exhibition, are open Monday to Friday, between 10am and 4pm.
