Don’t check in on Facebook — police warn holidaymakers

NOT “checking in” at airports on Facebook when you are off on holiday is one of the safety prevention messages from South Yorkshire Police’s new summer safety campaign.

The force said the summer brought new challenges for them as the warmer weather means people used their gardens and left their doors and windows unlocked.

The Be Wise campaign will run throughout the summer and police will be issuing safety messages using the hashtag #BeWise.

Supt Scott Green, force lead for burglary, said: “We want to encourage everyone to be wise about home and garden security this summer.

“Top tips such as locking your front door when enjoying a BBQ or keeping valuables and car keys out of sight will help you protect your property.

“If you are going away this summer, consider not checking in on Facebook to show that you are at an airport, advertising that you are leaving your property empty for some time.

“Likewise, waiting until you are back from travelling to post any holiday photos to social media reduces the risk of revealing that you are away from your home.”
