A large pile of wood, rubbish and pallets caught fire in Wombwell on Tuesday evening.

Fire crews were called at 8.40pm to tackle the blaze on Roy Kilner Road – and stayed until 12.45am the next morning with further checks after that to make sure the flames were out.

No cause for the fire has been determined yet.

The area covered by the wood and rubbish was 20 metres by 20 metres and the fire was described as “deep seated”.

Smoke was also produced by the blaze.

Hose reels and main jets were used by fire officers to deal with the incident.
