WATH SHOOTING: Neighbour tells of terror

“TERRIFIED and shocked” was the reaction of a Wath resident after a shooting just yards from his home.

Police officers were called to a house next door to the Everest takeaway on Doncaster Road in Wath at 8.40pm last night after the ambulance service received reports of a man with a gunshot wound.

A 42-year-old man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries where his condition remains unchanged.

But the 21-year-old neighbour, who did not wish to be named, was alerted to shooting by his dad who had been drinking in the Cross Keys pub a few doors down from the scene, when the incident happened.

The man told the Advertiser today: “There is only one reaction to have to this incident: terror. It’s just really terrifying.

“This is my local area and it’s the first time that anything like this has happened in the last 20 years.

“It’s all everyone is talking about this morning and it’s just not something you want on your doorstep.”

He added: “I was aware of it last night. My dad goes to the pub and as soon as he heard about it, he called me up straight away to check that I was OK.

“I’m not sure about who it was involved but from what I’ve heard it was a random shooting.”

Detectives believe this was an isolated, targeted attack and a cordon remains around the area, from Burman Road to Beech Road.

Anyone in the Doncaster Road area between 8.15pm and 9pm last night is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 1146 of 20 September, if they have seen anything suspicious. Alternatively witnesses can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
