Vulnerable man hospitalised after assault in his home

A 55-year-old man is in hospital in a serious condition after being badly assaulted in his home yesterday evening.

Emergency services were called to a property in Katherine Road, Thurcroft, at around 9.45pm yesterday (October 27) following reports a man had been found injured.

The 55-year-old was taken to hospital with multiple injuries and is currently in a serious condition.

Detective Inspector Simon Palmer said: “This was a sustained assault on a vulnerable man in his own home and we are working hard to gather as much information as we can about what may have happened.

“Officers are in the local area carrying out house-to-house enquires and we remain at the scene gathering evidence to try and identify those responsible for this awful crime.

“There will be an increased police presence in the area to provide reassurance for the local community and we’re keen to speak to anyone who may hold information.”

If you were in the Katherine Road area between 4pm and 10pm on Tuesday evening and witnessed any suspicious behaviour or activity, call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 1152 of October 27.

Detectives are also continuing their investigation into the assault of 80-year-old Tommy Ward at his Salisbury Road, Maltby home on October 1.

Two 19-year-old men remain on police bail after being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and burglary.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “At this time, there is nothing to suggest that the two incidents are linked but officers are exploring all possibilities and keeping an open mind.”
