Two arrested over "vicious" assault on taxi driver

TWO men were arrested after a Rotherham taxi driver was left seriously injured in what police described as a “vicious” assault.

A 20-year-old man and a 21-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection on a 40-year-old man on Campbell Drive in Herringthorpe (pictured) at 3.10am on Saturday.

The 20-year-old was released on police bail but the 21-year-old was still in custody today.

Police said the taxi driver suffered multiple injuries and was taken to hospital where he remained in a serious but stable condition.

Det Insp Sean Bird, the investigating officer, said: “Although the injured man remains in a serious condition, he has improved slightly and regained consciousness.

“This was a vicious assault and we currently pursuing a number of positive lines of enquiry.

“I would continue to ask anyone who may have been in the area of Campbell Drive in the early hours of Saturday morning and has any information that may assist the investigation come forward and speak to officers.”
