More than £2,000 worth of tools were taken from a van in Dinnington on Saturday, while a van in West Melton was targeted the previous day, with a £400 power drill taken.

Power tools worth £500 were taken from a vehicle in Wath.

PC Andy Robinson said: “Whether this is the same offender or a few people who have had the same idea, we’re not sure.

“There were also some thefts over the Easter weekend, when vans were parked up for longer periods.

“It could be that other vans have been broken into and nothing of value has been taken so the owners have not reported it.”

While thieves have long targeted builders’ and joiners’ vans for power tools, officers have seen an growing number of thefts in recent weeks.

Thieves then try to sell these tools on in pubs or on the doorstep, PC Robinson explained.

“We’re concerned that some offenders could be targeting any vans in case there are tools inside,” he said.

“We would like van owners in Rotherham to think about what they are leaving in their vans overnight.

He added: “When you have done ten hours on a building site you don’t necessarily want to be humping stuff inside, but it only takes a matter of seconds to put power tools in a house or secure garage.”

The advice also applies to car drivers — officers are investigating a number laptop thefts from cars parked in Rotherham, PC Robinson said.

“We just want people to take that extra ten seconds when they are parking up to remove anything valuable,” he added.

“If you leave valuable property in your vehicle overnight, know that there are people out there taking advantage.
