Teenager arrested as "machete attack" investigation continues

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with an incident in which three people were chased by machete-wielding men.

Tracy Visini (51) told the Advertiser that she, her son Ross and stepson Alex ran for their lives after the men shouted "Oi, oi!" and ran at them with the 12-inch weapons.

Tracy, of Kimberworth, said she was heading home after a shift behind the bar of her daughters pub, the William Fry, on Wellgate, when the incident happened.

She said that she and Ross (31) ran off but the two men gave chase to Alex (21), who dashed off the opposite way as their taxi sped away from the scene.

No one was injured during the incident.

The trio criticised the slow police response and even gathered the CCTV themselves from nearby businesses four days after the incident to hand to police.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said on Monday: “Extensive enquiries have been carried out by local officers since the affray was reported, including checks of CCTV cameras in the area and gathering witness statements.

“A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of affray.

“He has been bailed pending further enquiries.”

Police Constable Rick Revitt said: “We are very grateful to the public who have so far come forward to provide us with information about this incident.

“We know that CCTV images have been shared on social media in relation to this incident.

“We have chosen not to release CCTV images at this time as it puts our investigation at risk and jeopardises our ongoing enquiries to identify those responsible.

“We appreciate and understand that this incident has caused some significant distress in the local community and I want to reassure the public that a thorough and comprehensive investigation is being carried out and will continue.
