“I feel like a fool but I was taken in because they said they were from Virgin Media and I am a customer,” he said.

“They said they could help speed up my PC and put me through to the technical side, at which point I gave them control of the computer.

“It was only when I was put through to someone else who asked for payment that I realised it was a scam and by then it was too late.

“I would urge anyone contacted by these people not to do what they say. I spoke to Virgin Media and they said they never contact people in this way.”

The victim shut down his machine when the caller asked him for £69 payment, but he then discovered he had been locked out by the tricksters and ended up having to pay for expensive repairs.

Anyone who thinks they have been targeted by a possible scam call to contact Rotherham CAB on 01709 515680 or 08444 111 444 or South Yorkshire Police on 101.
