Police: Wath murder "impossible to understand"

POLICE have condemned the “shocking” attack by a Wath man who today admitted killing his wife and daughter.

Peter Redfern (70), of Sandygate, admitted the manslaughter his wife Jean (67) and the murder of their daughter Sarah (33) when he appeared before a judge at Sheffield Crown Court today.

Senior investigating officer, Det Chief Insp Chris Singleton, said: “Peter Redfern attacked his wife and daughter in a way that was shocking and impossible to understand.

“Only he knows why he committed such a violent act.

“We will continue to support the family and are relieved on their behalf that they will not have to suffer the trauma of a trial.

“Jean and Sarah were a mother and daughter who were as close as a mother and daughter could be.

“Our thoughts are with Jean and Sarah’s family as they begin this next step of the grieving process.

“We would ask that Jean and Sarah's family be allowed to grieve privately.”

Redfern will be sentenced Sheffield Crown Court tomorrow.
