Police take new action against domestic abuse

NEARLY 40 domestic violence protection orders have been granted in South Yorkshire since they were introduced six months ago.

The new legislation prevents perpetrators from contacting victims and breaching is a criminal offence.

South Yorkshire Police have applied for 49 orders since they were brought in at the beginning of June, with 38 being granted.

Sgt Suzanne Bluck said: “We would always prefer to secure a restraining order, to give victims long-term protection from their abusers, but in some cases this simply isn’t possible.

“DVPOs provide us with a short-term, supportive solution that gives the victims precious time and space to consider their future.”
