Police play down Mexborough and Tickhill dog theft fears

POLICE have played down concerns about a spate of dog thefts after rumours spread on social media — but urged pet owners to remain security-conscious.

Posts were made on Facebook groups including Mexborough Then And Now warning about a white Transit van containing men who claimed to be fish sellers visiting the area.

The van’s occupants, it was claimed, marked the kerb outside houses so thieves could steal dogs living them.

It was also rumoured that the same van had been seen in the Tickhill area.

PC Matt Duffy said reports of dog thefts were generally on the decline and the rumours could be based on incidents happening in other countries.

He said: “Despite a small increase in 2014, on the whole over the last few years the number of thefts of dogs has reduced.

“Thefts of dogs can be reported due to a variety of circumstances including dispute of ownership after a relationship breakdown or theft from unlocked cars.

“We receive reports of concern when notices appear on Facebook, warning people about gangs who are checking houses for dogs.

“We always investigate any reports of this nature.

“However, these stories often originate from other countries despite being shared in the UK.

“In order to protect your dog from opportunist thieves, ensure that back gardens and gates are fully secure.

“If you are leaving your dog in a car, make sure that it is not left for long periods of time on a hot day and lock the vehicle.

“To help return your dog if it goes missing or it is stolen, ensure that is it microchipped.
