Police: Mexborough robberies may be linked

POLICE investigating a street robbery in Mexborough over the bank holiday weekend believe it may be linked to another incident.

A 76-year-old woman walking from Pym Road to Milton Road on Saturday evening suffered minor injuries when she was pushed over by a man who took her purse.

Officers believe the robbery might be connected with a theft at nearby Dolcliffe Road two days earlier, when a 68-year-old woman’s purse was snatched.

The suspect in both cases is described white, slim, around 5ft 5-8ins tall and in his late teens or early 20s.

South Yorkshire Police have increased patrols in the area and are appealing for information from members of the public.

Supt Eddie Murphy said: “While I do not want to cause undue alarm or distress, I would like to warn pensioners to be especially on their guard in the Mexborough area at the moment, as there have been two similar incidents within a relatively short space of time.

“Someone out there must know who committed these crimes, in which some of the most vulnerable members of the community have been targeted, and I would strongly encourage these people not to protect those responsible.”

Anyone with information should call 101, quoting incident 1251 of May 3, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
