Police in "secure your home" plea

POLICE have warned Easter holidaymakers to make sure their homes are safe before going away.

One issue can be where caravans are usually stored on driveways and burglars spot when owners are preparing for a trip or the vehicle has moved.

Chief Supt Jason Harwin, South Yorkshire Police’s crime prevention lead, said:

“Burglars are often on the lookout at this time of year for people preparing their caravans for trips away.

“This could lead to the theft of your caravan when it might not be as secure as it usually is or even burglars waiting until you go away and breaking-in to your home.”

The force has offered the following advice:

- Ask a neighbour if they would consider parking a vehicle on your drive whilst you are away so that it looks like you are home

- Use timers on lights and maybe a radio in your home

- Make sure you have locked all doors and windows and put keys somewhere safe

- Do not leave valuable items on display at home

- Make sure your burglar alarm is set.

Report suspicious activity on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
