Pensioner claims staff didn’t help after she was robbed in Rotherham town centre shop

A SHOPPER told of her horror after her purse was stolen by a pickpocket in Rotherham town centre — and shop staff seemed reluctant to help catch the culprit.

The pensioner said she had found after visiting Bonmarché in Howard Street that her purse had gone missing — and was shocked to find the shop did not have CCTV to help the police investigation.

The incident came to light after the woman, who asked not to be named,  reached into her bag in another shop only to find the purse had vanished, complete with her bank card and a large amount of cash.

The OAP said she recalled someone brushing past her in the clothes shop and believed this is when the sneaky theft took place.

But she said when she had contacted the store by phone later to ask about any help with an investigation, she was told there was no CCTV in there.

The shopper said the member of staff she spoke to said she “only worked” there and was not able to provide any more assistance.

“I couldn’t understand why they don’t have any cameras,” she said.

“I’ve not been given an apology.”

She said her grand-daughter had called to cancel her stolen bank card, which she was told had already been used for a £40 payment at Meadowhall.

The stolen purse is blue with a zip around the outside

A spokesperson for Bonmarché said they were happy to help the police, adding: “I can only imagine how upset she must be about this.”

Police said they had investigated the theft, which happened last Tuesday afternoon, but closed their investigation.

A spokesperson said: “An investigation was carried out by officers and the case has since been closed after all lines of enquiry were exhausted.”
