Open water danger warning from firefighters

FIREFIGHTERS will be on station this coming Bank Holiday Monday to warn people about the dangers of water.

The crews will visit Rother Valley Country Park on August 27 to advise people about the dangers of being in, on or near to open water.

They will talk with park visitors and hand out water safety leaflets, urging them to follow some basic guidelines.

Crew manager Gary Ridgeway from Aston Park station said: “While the water may look tempting on a warm day, it is still very dangerous.

“We want people to enjoy the waterfront safely. Rivers, canals and open water can present a real danger if you've had a drink.

“The water can be extremely cold and, added to the effects of alcohol, can affect the reactions of even the strongest swimmer.”

Advice from the safety experts includes taking care around banks, which may be slippery or crumble.

Locks and weirs should be avoided, as they are associated with strong and dangerous water currents.

They urge parents to supervise children when they are near open water, or when fishing or boating.

Firefighters also asked all park users to obey warning signs, not interfere with safety equipment such as life preservers and avoid entering the water after drinking alcohol.
