Ofsted chief who quit over Rotherham abuse lands new job

A FORMER Ofsted chief forced to apologise for failures in detecting the abuse of 1,400 children in Rotherham has landed a new job — and a £75,000 pay-off.

John Goldup (pictured), former deputy head of Ofsted, was forced to apologise over failure to detect that 1,400 teen girls were abused by gangs in Rotherham and later left his £155,000-a-year role at the organisation.

But details published in Ofsted’s annual accounts have revealed that he pocketed £75,000 as “compensation for loss of office” upon his departure.

He then landed a role as head of Buckinghamshire Children’s Services Improvement Board, chairing his first meeting back in April.

An Ofsted spokesman said: “As our published annual accounts state, John Goldup received a payment for loss of office in 2013 after his departure from Ofsted.

“His departure followed a decision by Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector to incorporate our social care work into Ofsted's wider regional structure.”

The spokesman added: “The payment he received was in line with Cabinet Office guidance.”
