New probe after fire breaks out near scene of shooting

POLICE and fire chiefs are investigating a blaze which broke out yards from the scene of a shooting.

A section of Doncaster Road in Wath was closed for the second time in four days after emergency services were called to a garage fire behind a property at 4.35am today.

Detectives have not yet confirmed whether the fire was linked to, or at the property of, gun victim Tyrone Woodhead (42), who was shot in his hallway after answering a knock at the door on Friday. New police tape surrounds the stretch of properties this morning.

Two crews from Rotherham and Dearne stations attended the garage which was described as being “well ablaze”.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire Service said that the garage had been gutted but had not spread to any surrounding properties.

Emergency services were called to Mr Woodhead’s Doncaster Road home at around 8.40pm on Friday.

The delivery driver was taken to hospital with “significant life-threatening injuries”.
