Mayor opens new Dearne Fire station

ROTHERHAM’S newest fire station has been formally opened in a special ceremony.

Rotherham Borough Council leader Cllr Stone did the honours at the £5.5 million Dearne Community Fire Station.

It marked South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service’s move former fire stations at Mexborough and Brampton to the purpose-built community station.

The station, which has the capacity to house four fire engines, was built by North Midland Building Ltd.

The 3.5-acre site will also be home to a state-of-the-art training facility for the fire service’s technical rescue unit and a community room for local residents to use for meetings and events.

The building has been hailed as a showcase for green design, with a wealth of resource saving features including solar power, water recycling and biodiversity promotion.

South Yorkshire’s Chief Fire Officer Mark Smitherman said: “We are delighted with our new purpose designed building.

“The facilities offer an excellent base for the firefighters who provide the community with a first-class emergency response service.

“It not only offers considerable operational benefits and community facilities but its environmental features will greatly increase the sustainability of this important building for decades to come.”
