Knife attack teen has sentence cut

A TEENAGER who carried out a vicious knife attack on a pregnant woman has had her seven-year prison sentence cut.

Briony Bayston (17), of Woodfield Avenue, Mexborough, was jailed in April after admitting wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm after a row broke out on a social media site.

Sheffield Crown Court heard that in August 2012, Bayston had an argument with a 20-year-old woman known to her.

The woman, who was six months pregnant, attended Bayston’s address to discuss what had been said in person.

Bayston attacked the woman with a knife, but did not cause any serious injuries to her or the baby.

The 17-year-old was arrested and pleaded guilty to the offence.

But after challenging the sentence at London’s Court of Appeal, her jail term was reduced to five years.

Mr Justice Blake said insufficient account was taken of her ‘youth and immaturity’ at the time of the attack.
