Jail for Mexborough firearms offender

A BURGLAR who stole a woman’s phone and assaulted a man with an imitation firearm within two hours has been jailed.

Gary Cooper (28) was handed a 30-month sentence at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday (10).

Cooper, of Dodworth Street in Mexborough, stole the mobile phone from Teddy’s Amusements on High Street in December.

He attacked a 49-year-old man, who was sitting in his van in a car park, with the firearm a short while later.

Cooper was jailed for 18 months for assault and 12 months for burglary to run consecutively. He was also given a concurrent 12-month sentence for possession of an imitation firearm.

PC Lisa Kelly said: “Officers swiftly detained Cooper and we built a strong case against him to secure this prosecution.

“Fortunately the male victim did not sustain serious injuries, however he was left extremely shaken by the assault, an action which Cooper gave no consideration to.

“We will always thoroughly investigate any crime reported to us and endeavour to bring offenders before the courts.”
