Homes cleared as National Grid engineers tackle gas leak

TWO homes were evacuated in the middle of the night after a fears of a major gas leak. Police and fire officers and staff from the National Grid were called to Newsam Road, Kilnhurst, at 10pm on Sunday.

Engineers worked through the night to fix the leak in a service pipe leading from the road to a block of houses.

Only two addresses had to be evacuated. Others properties were already empty.

But later National Grid officials ruled out any substantial threat of an explosion.

A National Grid spokeswoman said: “We were called to Newsam Road after a report of a smell of gas outside a property.

“We notified the police in case we had to enter one of the empty properties.

“There was an escape on the service pipe that comes into the building from the road. They worked through the night and left the site at 8am on Monday.”
